Kagoshima is the southern gateway of Japan. Southerly ocean breezes provide Kagoshima Prefecture with a temperate to sub-tropical climate thus making the weather typically mild and comfortable year around. The region has a long history of volcanic activity with eleven still active, such that much of the land throughout Kagoshima has been covered in a layer of volcanic ash known as “shirasu” (in Japanese). This ash helps produce soil that is exceptionally rich in minerals. Abundant rainfall plus a very suitable growing climate and soil make Kagoshima Prefecture a premiere supply base of agricultural products for the rest of Japan. One of these products is excellent green tea.

        Kagoshima Green Tea History

There are several theories how green tea cultivation took root in Kagoshima. The most agreed upon is that a Buddhist priest from the Kyoto area traveled to the hamlet of Yoshimatsu approximately 700 years ago to establish a temple, and thereupon cultivated the first camellia sinensis plant. Tea production occurred only in local areas and remained quite small for several hundred years. Later during the Edo Era (1603-1867) the predominant Satsuma clan encouraged tea cultivation on farms for wider commercial purposes. This increased production greatly but the tea quality was poor and most of it was consumed regionally. In 1887 the first tea producers association was instituted in an effort to improve quality, but it was not until the early 1950's that real improvement was achieved. This was when a large contingent of apprentice farmers relocated to the famed Makinohara region of Shizuoka to learn advanced tea growing and processing techniques. After completion of their training the apprentices returned to Kagoshima and theYabukita cultivar (first developed in Shizuoka) was introduced, thus better quality tea production took hold. By 1975 Kagoshima Prefecture was producing significant amounts of green tea. Even so, the quality and taste of Kagoshima green tea remained relatively inferior to that from other parts of Japan because production facilities were still developing their skills. During these years, much of the raw tea production of Kagoshima was shipped to Shizuoka to be further processed and blended with the much better quality teas from that area. Then in the late 1980's the Kagoshima Prefectural Government mounted a concerted effort to improve quality and name recognition by strengthening the Tea Experiment Station and Tea Growers Association. Their efforts have resulted in considerable success.

About Kagoshima Present Day and Future

        Present Day and Future

Due to the broad, flat terrain of Kagoshima Prefecture, long perfectly-aligned rows of tea can be planted and then harvested by mechanical harvesting machines developed exclusively for this purpose. These unique high-volume harvesters are highly efficient and effect a very precise and even pluck of each tea leaf. Presently the Yabukita cultivar represents 41% of total tea production in Kagoshima compared to a national proportion of 76%. Yabukita production is smaller in Kagoshima Prefecture due to the fact that an astounding variety of new camellia sinenses cultivars have been developed there in the last three decades. Twenty eight percent of Kagoshima green tea comes from the Yutaka Midori cultivar followed by smaller amounts from the Sae Midori and Asatsuyu. Others include the Okumusashi, Kanaya Midori, Zairai, Asanoka, and Sakura Jima. Tea leaves from two or more of these cultivars are often blended to achieve the desired aroma and taste balance. The combination of exemplary growing conditions, high-volume harvesting and skilled processing give Kagoshima tea producers comparative advantages over all others in Japan. High quality at reasonable prices have garnered Kagoshima green tea a growing international reputation. It can be concluded that the Kagoshima tea industry is in a constant state of effectively pursuing improvement of total quality management, and that Japanese green tea consumers throughout the world are reaping the benefits.

About Kagoshima Present Day and Future

In modern facilities staffed with proficiently skilled tea artisans, Kagoshima Prefecture produces approximately 26% of the total national output of finished tea, while Shizuoka Prefecture produces 45%, a combination that dominates the production of Japanese green tea. Other areas with limited tea growing and processing potential such as Uji, Yame and Saga each produce only small amounts of the total which makes their green tea relatively expensive due to a restricted supply. Today the majority of Japanese green tea farmers are older than age 60. And while the number of Japanese people interested in becoming tea farmers decreases, large numbers of human labor intensive tea farms are being abandoned. Most areas of Japan harvest their tea crop two or three times per year while Kagoshima tea growers harvest four times, and in some years five times if weather conditions are favorable. With these factors in mind, along with the previously mentioned advantages, Kagoshima Prefecture is likely to remain the second or perhaps become the leading production area in Japan. The future is bright for Kagoshima green tea.

          An Outstanding Matcha

If you just use your matcha in smoothies or in baking, then this would be overkill. If you enjoy a more nuanced match either as a straight tea or latte, then Kagoshima Tea's Ceremonial Organic Matcha is worth getting. It's everything that is good about ceremonial grade matcha. Unfortunately, it is priced accordingly.I'm a tea drinker and was introduced to Matcha several years ago. I love everything about it from the tradition to the myriad health benefits. I've tried all kinds and Kagoshima is up there with the best. And that is in the ceremonial grade category! It is vibrant green, finely ground, blends well, and is fresh, delicate, and slightly sweet without heavy-handed grassiness or bitterness. It is lovely whisked into hot water, but I prefer to savor mine with a bit of creamer and sweetener. If you drink your matcha mostly pure, then you owe it to yourself to give Kagoshima's Ceremonial Powder a try.Product of Japan~ Kort

Very smooth and sweet matcha -- best in water

#organic, #madeinJapanI make matcha every morning and drink matcha two ways, in hot water and whisked with my chasen and the second way is to mix it directly with milk to make a matcha latte. I don't add sugar so the taste of the matcha really has to shine. I've tried 20+ brands of matcha and this one is one of the smoothest ones with a very delicate flavor of all the brands I've tried. The color of this was vibrant deep green color which is associated with good quality matcha. The smell was fresh and grassy.WATER mixed with Chasen (whisked at 170F)I found this matcha to be very good and have a smoothest mouth feel of all the matcha's I've tried before. It has little to no umami and is sweeter than matcha's I've tried in the past. There is also a good amount of astringent flavor that builds up nicely and, as that builds, the floral hints of this matcha start coming out. There is no bitterness to this matcha making it very enjoyable mixed this way. If anything the taste of this matcha is one of the more delicate flavor profiles of all the matcha I've tried and is very delightful to drink when just frothed with water.MILK latte mixed with frotherI found this matcha too delicate to hold itself up against the milk. Many of the delicate flavors are lost unless an excess amount of matcha is used. So while I can make a latte with this matcha, I found that I have other more bolder matchas better suited where the matcha flavor can shine through the milk.Overall I would recommend this matcha as an excellent ceremonial grade matcha to be mixed with water. The delicate flavor and the building of the astringent flavors were very enjoyable. I would not recommend this premium matcha for mixing with lattes and definitely not for baking as it would be a waste of such good quality matcha. There are cheaper alternatives with bolder flavors that can hold it's own against adding milk or other ingredients when baking. As with all matcha preparations, make sure you do not exceed 175F-180F when preparing your matcha as it can destroy the delicate flavors and make even the best matcha bitter.Review For:Kagoshima Tea Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder – 30g Ceremonial Grade Matcha – Premium Organic Matcha with Natural Sweetness and Grassy Taste – Easy Brewing Matcha

Delicious Smooth Matcha. Beautiful Bright Green. No Bitterness

High quality organic matcha here. Super fine bright green powder. Made a deep green tea that tastes green, grassy, and delicious. Smooth with no bitter aftertaste. Just lovely. The tea comes in a small sealed tin for freshness. The best by date is clearly marked (mine says AUG 2022). Product of Japan.I would get this again and recommend it.

Everything I Expect out of a Ceremonial Grade.

I absolutely love green tea but nothing beats matcha green tea. This is my favorite type of green tea and it has the most nutritional benefits to it. If you aren't familiar with how the different grades of matcha works, ceremonial is the highest and most purest grade out there. It is made from the youngest of green tea leaves and it offers the most nutritional benefit. As you go on down the grade scale you get older and lesser quality tastes. These are good and still have benefits but ceremonial grade is the absolute best. This is a nice smooth and grassy matcha. It has absolutely 0 bitter tones to it, compared with culinary and baking grades.Look at the beautiful bright green vibrant color this is! The color is a tail sign of how fresh and what what quality your matcha is and this one passes with flying colors. It is most impressive. I noticed another reviewer felt that this was grainy and that the matcha settled at the bottom of the cup. Here is a little tip on how to use your ceremonial grade matcha to its fullest potential: If you are going to purchase the finest quality of matcha like this here, it might be worthwhile to invest in a little matcha making set. These sets usually includes a whisk. If you whisk your matcha it will break apart any granules or clumps, creating a smooth and frothy matcha. This is far superior than just pouring water in and mixing the powder in and makes for a more pleasant experience.
